AmaZulu co-coach Vusumuzi ‘Kanu’ Vilakazi has revealed the club are in search of a striker to add onto their blunt attacking line.
Despite scoring seven goals in their last five matches under Vilakazi and fellow co-coach Arthur Zwane, the Usuthu are desperate to turn their new found free-flowing style of play into goals and thereafter points.
Lingering just above the relegation zone after nine games played, the Durban-based outfit are desperate to break into the top eight team on the Betway Premiership standings and feel they’ll need another number nine to make that a reality.
On-loan Mamelodi Sundowns man Etiosa Ighodaro has handled the goalscoring duties so far, having scored three goals in eight games with a single assist as well. However, in his absence against his parent club in AmaZulu’s last game, the side looked toothless until natural winger Tshepang Moremi was pushed into the No 9 role in the second half.
Speaking after the match, Kanu expressed that the lack of goals from the bench was a concerning issue and one they will look to address in the January transfer window.
“It’s a worrying department. We tried Tshepang as a striker because we felt he had the appetite to exploit space but we are still looking for a striker,” he said.
“Even in our next game, Ighodaro will be available but we can’t rely on one person and Junior (Dion) is having a rough time at the moment but we’ll try our best to help him bounce and see what is going to happen.
He further added: “We still have Mbhobho (Senzo Ndlovu) as well but he’s still deal with case of adaptation because he was playing in the ABC Motsepe and jumped straight into the top flight so we need to re-align him and make sure he understands the demands of this level.
Usuthu will close out the year with a tough away fixture to Cape Town City on Saturday and could start 2025 as high as ninth with a win in Cape Town. | Independent Media Sport
