Cape Town – The Rugby World Cup Sevens to be held in Cape Town in September has received a R1 million boost.

The tournament will be hosted in Cape Town from September 9-11.

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has provided an additional R1 089 000 to ensure that the event can be successfully held as the province’s economy continues to grow.

“This is one of a few different tournaments that the province will be hosting over the coming months, with others including the Masters Hockey World Cup in October, some matches for the Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup in February and the Netball World Cup in July 2023,” MEC Anroux Marais said.

“We are happy to be able to support this big tournament.

“It will be an important boost for the province as we will welcome teams, coaching staff and spectators from across the world.

“This will have a big impact on our local economy and provide more job opportunities.

“We are excited to see a packed stadium with spectators cheering on their teams.

“All these upcoming tournaments will bring welcome economic injections through sport tourism and we are proud to be able to say that Cape Town is ready and has the facilities to host tournaments at this level.”

During the World Cup the 40 best men’s and women’s international teams will take to the field in Cape Town.

New Zealand head to South Africa as defending champions in both the men’s and women’s tournaments after the Black Ferns Sevens and All Blacks Sevens made history in San Francisco four years ago.
