Cape Town – The countdown to the return of the popular HSBC Cape Town Sevens has reached fever pitch, with just a week to go before the 2022 edition kicks off.

The Sevens rugby tournament is set to make a grand comeback on Friday, 9 December 2022, after the last two years were called off due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Featuring 16 men’s and 12 women’s teams, the tournament will be played over three days at the DHL Stadium.

Cape Town will be hosting the tournament for the sixth time this year since it moved from Gqeberha in 2015.

“The Cape Town leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series has proven to be a popular event on the calendar, having been voted Best Live Experience in South Africa at Sports Industry Awards.

“Cape Town is again looking forward to providing the ultimate fan experience for the thousands who will be filling up the DHL stadium,” safety and security mayco member JP Smith said.

“The City’s Events Coordinating Committee has been hard at work with SA Rugby to put all the required logistics in place to make this event’s return a festive occasion.

“We would like to implore rugby lovers to pick up from the success of the Rugby World Cup Sevens, come out in numbers and break another attendance record,” Smith added.
