Cape Town - Germany has announced an end to the export of animals, whether for slaughter or breeding to any country outside the European Union (EU).

The export of live animals from Germany to any country outside the EU for the purpose of breeding will be prohibited from July 2023.

The method of trade causes pain, suffering and distress to many animals, according to experts.

Germany is the first EU country to take this bold step for animals.

The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) said the historic decision will save thousands of cows, sheep, and goats from suffering in the live export industry.

“Currently, Germany has a ban placed against the export of live animals for the purpose of slaughter anywhere outside the European Union. The historic decision taken by Germany will save thousands of animals from suffering in the live export industry. The NSPCA celebrates this victory for the animals in Germany, and we continue to dedicate our time and effort to one day securing the same victory for our animals in South Africa,” the NSPCA said.

The Coalition of African Animal Welfare Organisations (CAAWO) echoed the NSPCA’s sentiments, saying they are hoping South Africa will follow suit.

“CAAWO commends the progressiveness of Germany in banning live export animals. Another positive move geared at alleviating the pain and suffering of animals. May other countries including South Africa follow this example and take this bold progressive step,” they said.
