CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is urging parents and caregivers to apply for their children as the deadline for the next academic year looms.

They have until April 15 to apply for the 2023 academic year.

WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said more than 90 000 people have registered their children to date, of which, 43 000 were for Grade 8 enrolment.

Every year the department is usually plagued with the demand for space in schools, especially for Grade 1 and 8 pupils.

“We want to thank all those that have applied timeously and appeal to others that wish to apply for the next school year, to do so by April 15, 2022.

"Applying after this date could affect their choice of placement and it will affect our planning.

“The WCED admissions website is a free service, that is zero-rated. The WCED does, however, understand that some parents or caregivers are restricted in terms of accessibility to equipment.

"That is why the department has arranged for parents to apply via our district offices, or the pop-ups by the WCED at shopping malls and schools,” said Hammond.

Some schools have also communicated to parents within their communities that they will be opening their labs for parents to apply.

Parents and caregivers can log onto https://admissions.westerncape.gov.za to apply online.
