Cape Town – Police are investigating the death of a 37-year-old woman knocked down by a train in Bonteheuwel this week.
Metrorail Western Cape says there have been three rail fatalities since the start of the year. The police said they responded to a call on Monday and found the deceased woman.
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said an inquest was registered for further investigation.
Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott said the identity of the deceased was not yet known.
“A female tried to cross the railway lines and was struck by a train at about 10.30am,” she said.
She said the incident resulted in the temporary suspension of the Bishop Lavis line until the police investigation was completed.
“Until such time commuters are advised to make alternative arrangements between Bellville and Cape Town in both directions.
“We express our sincere condolences to her family and friends,” she said.
Scott advised commuters not to compromise their safety by being careful when crossing tracks.
“At all times use overhead bridges or underpasses.
“With a reduced fleet and resultant diminished carrying capacity, overcrowding will remain a challenge until more capacity is added to the network,” she said.
Bonteheuwel councillor Angus McKenzie said: “I sincerely hope that they will find the right mechanisms to manage the influx.”
