Durban — The body of a 4-month-old baby girl was recovered after community members spotted the body while they were walking next to the river.
IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Dylan Meyrick said earlier on Saturday morning, IPSS Medical Rescue and SAPS responded to reports of a body floating in a river in the Isithebe area, northern KwaZulu-Natal.
“Sadly, upon the arrival of paramedics, it was discovered the body was that of a four-month-old baby,” Meyrick said.
“According to reports from the scene, the baby went missing the previous evening during load shedding and despite family and community searching throughout the night, the baby was not found.
“Children walking past the river this (Saturday) morning noticed something floating in the river covered in flies and upon closer inspection noted it was the little girl,” Meyrick said.
He said that SAPS were on the scene to investigate the circumstances surrounding the toddler’s death.
Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said that on Friday, at 11pm, the mother of a 4-month-old baby realised that her child was not with her in bed.
“A search ensued and the child was found the following morning floating at a nearby river with no visible injuries. An inquest docket was opened at Nyoni SAPS for investigation,” Ngcobo said.
