Durban — With rampant crime plaguing KwaZulu-Natal, EFF Member of Parliament (MP) Mbuyiseni Ndlozi undertook an oversight visit to the Inanda police station on Wednesday.

Inanda is a place known for various crimes including rape and murder.

The oversight came amid the spiralling crime rates after Inanda registered the second highest number of murders after Nyanga township in the Western Cape.

This is according to recent crime statistics released by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu in August for the 2023/2024 financial year.

The alarming figures prompted Ndlozi’s visit, aimed at assessing the challenges faced by law enforcement in the township north of Durban.

Accompanied by the EFF’s provincial leadership, Ndlozi engaged with the station management, seeking to understand the hurdles they faced in fighting crime.

Ndlozi asked the station management if it had a murder-prevention strategy.

"For the past ten years, Inanda has been in the top five in terms of murders in the country. This is a worrying trend. I will now work with the station commander to ensure that the station gets the resources it needs to fight high levels of crime, including murder," said Ndlozi.

Ndlozi announced he would “adopt” the Inanda police station, vowing to facilitate ongoing support to bolster their efforts in crime prevention programmes.

“I have adopted the Inanda police to ensure that it gets the much-needed support to service the community,” he said.

Ndlozi is the EFF’s deployee to the province of KZN, where the party lost significant ground during the May elections, plunging from 9.71% in 2019 (8 seats) to a mere 2.26% (2 seats) in the latest elections the party lost considerable ground during the May elections.

In a crime-busting collaborative effort, last month, Police Minister Mchunu, eThekwini mayor Cyril Xaba, and MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma convened in Durban.

“We are pleased that the minister has brought us together to find lasting solutions. We want to convey our appreciation to the minister for this initiative, which demonstrates the government’s commitment to working with all sectors of society to fight the scourge of crime,” said Xaba at the time.
