DURBAN –Police from the uThukela District arrested a 39-year-old woman and 51-year-old man for contravening the Disaster Management Act.

Police also arrested six more suspects and charged them for contravening the National Road Traffic Act and also recovered a 9mm pistol with four rounds of ammunition.

Spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said on Christmas Day police from the uThukela District had hardly finished charging a suspect and safe keeping exhibits that had been confiscated when they were called out for assistance.

Mbele said while a team of police were busy conducting their operation they received an information of a tavern which was open for businesses.

“A 39-year-old female and a 51-year-old man were arrested for contravening the Disaster Management Act,” Mbele said.

“The premises were shut down and it's stock which was valued in excess of R50 000 was confiscated by police.”

Mbele said the two suspects are expected to appear before the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

“The operation continued and further six suspects were arrested and charged for contravention of the National Road Traffic Act.”

“A 9mm pistol with four rounds of ammunition was recovered.”
