DURBAN - Three computer towers were stolen during a burglary at eMadlangeni Local Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal.

A security guard at the premises was also assaulted during the burglary on Friday, a day before Christmas. The eMadlangeni Local Municipality, previously known as Utrecht Local Municipality, is an administrative area in the Amajuba District.

In a public statement, eMadlangeni Municipality stated that their offices were broken into by unknown criminals in the early hours.

It is reported that the criminals gained access through the municipality palisade fence and proceeded to the security guards’ room, where they manhandled and attacked the security guard on site.

“They stole the security guard’s personal belongings such as cash and a cellphone and forced the security personnel to the municipality’s main office entrance, which is where they broke into three offices in the municipality and stole three computer towers then fled the scene,” the statement read.

The security guard sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital for medical attention.

“The municipality condemns this criminal act and we urge members of the public to desist from purchasing stolen goods and rather report anyone who attempts to sell these items to the police,” the statement read.

A criminal case has been opened at Utrecht SAPS.

Community members who can assist with resolving this case are urged to contact the investigating officer on 034 331 2010 or the municipal manager 081 709 1234.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said police received a complaint of business robbery in Voor Street, Utrecht. At the scene they were informed by a 30-year-old security guard that whilst he was performing his duties he was accosted by three males who tied him up with shoe laces in the guard house.

"The suspects then entered the building and took electronic items and an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene."

A case of business robbery was opened at Utrecht SAPS for investigation.
