Durban — KwaZulu-Natal electrical engineering student Phiwayinkosi Ntshangase, 23, of Mthashana TVET College in Nongoma, will represent South Africa in Austria on Saturday, after winning the WorldSkills South Africa (WSSA) national competition in electrical installation.

The competition was implemented by the Department of Higher Education (DHET) and Training to showcase the skills of college students.

Ntshangase participated in a series of electrical installation competitions which saw him triumph over other students from across the country.

Thembani Ntshangase said her son Phiwayinkosi’s selection came as no surprise because he did not allow anything to defeat him.

“From a very young age, I had always seen that Phiwe has a gift and talent. His name in English means he was ‘my gift from God’, and he has prophesied his name,” she said.

She added that it is not usual that people in rural areas get recognised. She said ever since she heard the news, she could not hold back tears of joy.

Phiwayinkosi said he has always been fascinated by maths and anything to do with using his hands. He said that dream came true when he got to Grade 10 and his school, Falaza High School, offered electrical engineering classes.

“This feeling is inexplainable. The competition got hard at some point but I soldiered on and I am glad I did.”

He said he was overwhelmed by the support he received from the Nongoma Municipality, the DHET and the public.

“A skill is only a skill when nurtured well, and with support it allows you to excel and I am grateful.”

The mayor of Nongoma, councillor Albert Mncwango, said: “We wish him all the best and hopefully he wins again. This is an inspiration for the young people in Nongoma, and hopefully it will inspire more young people to follow in the footsteps of Phiwayinkosi, Nongoma and indeed the rest of the country.”

The send-off will be held at the Nongoma council chamber on Friday.
