Durban — The man who allegedly went on a shooting rampage and killed two people in Ndwedwe, north of Durban, on Wednesday morning is expected in court on Thursday after his arrest.

Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said that on Wednesday a multidisciplinary police team had arrested a 43-year-old man for two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

She said the arrests came after an incident which occurred at Ezindlovini in the Ndwedwe policing precinct.

“The suspect arrived at the home of a man he suspected of dating his fiancée. The suspect kicked the door open before he shot and fatally wounded the 36-year-old man,” Ngcobo said.

“He thereafter proceeded to the homestead of his 34-year-old fiancée, where he shot and fatally wounded her. He also shot and wounded his fiancée’s mother, 58, and an eight-year-old child, who were transported to hospital. The suspect fled the scene in his getaway vehicle.”

Ngcobo said police officers from the surrounding police stations and units were mobilised and gave chase.

“The suspect was arrested at Ngcongangconga in Nsuze, where he was also found in unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. He will make his first appearance at the Nsuze Magistrate’s Court (on Thursday),” Ngcobo said.

Reaction Unit SA, who responded to the scene, said a man had gunned down his cheating girlfriend and her lover.

“Two people were fatally injured and two others were injured during a shooting incident at two different locations in Msunduzi, Ndwedwe,” Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram said.

He said that a white minibus taxi arrived at Rusa headquarters at approximately 5.54am on Wednesday. The driver told Rusa officers that three relatives had been shot by the woman’s boyfriend at their home. He could not confirm whether the gunman was still on the property.

Balram said that Rusa officers and paramedics were sent to the scene, but were flagged down by a member of the public approximately 1km prior to arrival. The individual informed officers the driver of a white Toyota Yaris had shot a 37-year-old male in his home.

“The man escorted Rusa members to the residence where the body of a male was discovered on the floor of his bedroom. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

“According to his elderly mother, a man had arrived at the residence in search of her son (on Tuesday) afternoon. He alleged that the deceased was having an affair with his girlfriend and he intended shooting him. The deceased was not at home at the time,” Balram said.

“The same individual returned (on Wednesday) morning and knocked on the door. When the deceased’s mother realised that it was the same man who had threatened to shoot her son, she attempted to block the entrance. He then produced a firearm and forcefully pushed her out of the way. He then entered the room her son occupied and shot him in the head. According to witnesses, the suspect drove off in a white Toyota Yaris (registration unknown).”

Balram said Rusa officers attending to the initial scene approximately 1km away confirmed that a 34-year-old female had been shot in the head and back.

“She was pronounced deceased on arrival. Her 55-year-old mother was shot in the chest, while her 10-year-old nephew was injured after he was grazed by a bullet on his right arm. The injured were stabilised on scene before they were transported to hospital by ambulance. Family of the deceased confirmed that the shooter was the fatally injured female’s boyfriend.”
