Durban — The Statistician-General of South Africa will release the results of the Governance, Public Safety and Justice Survey 2021/22 Victims of Crime Report on Tuesday.
Looking back, the report showS that around 1.9 million households experienced housebreaking/burglary in the past five years.
The survey lists six types of household crimes: housebreaking, home robbery, theft of motor vehicles, murder, assault and sexual offence. Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke will release the results at a media briefing in Pretoria.
“The report will cover the experience of specific types of crime by households and individuals, the incidences and the reporting of crime. This includes housebreaking, theft of personal property, assault, vehicle hijacking and home robbery, amongst others,” said Statistics SA.
Here’s what the Victims of Crime Report revealed:
- Around 312 000 households experienced home robbery during the past five years; the number was down 23% from the previous year.
- Around 212 000 households experienced car theft during the past five years; the number was down 24% from the previous year.
- Around 43 000 households experienced murder during the past five years, the number was down 19% from the previous year.
- About 91% of households that experienced theft of a motor vehicle reported some or all incidences to the police
- About 809 000 households experienced housebreaking/burglary in 2020/21. This was 4,6% of the households in South Africa.
- The highest proportion (6,7%) of households that experienced housebreaking was in the Western Cape, and Free State experienced the lowest proportion (1,3%) of households that experienced housebreaking.
- Incidences of housebreaking peaked in February, June and August in 2020/21.
- In 2020/21, 583 000 individuals (16%) experienced consumer fraud during the past five years. Consumer fraud includes advance-fee fraud (R99 debit/credit card scam, 419 scams, online shopping).
- Individuals who felt safe walking alone in their neighbourhoods during the day decreased from 86,6% in 2019/20 to 84,8% in 2020/21. Those who felt safe walking alone at night decreased from 41,9% in 2019/20 to 39,7% in 2020/21.
