South Africa’s own Princess Charlene of Monaco made a dazzling appearance at the 2025 Bal de la Rose, held on March 29 at the glamorous Salle des Étoiles.

Leading the royal family at the prestigious annual event, she turned heads in one of her most daring fashion choices yet.

The former Olympic swimmer stepped out in an elegant, avant-garde Dolce & Gabbana creation featuring intricate lace detailing, a sculpted strapless bodice, and an asymmetric silhouette.

The £4,350 (R103,000) ‘Lamé Chantilly Lace Dress’ from the renowned Italian fashion house exuded sophistication.

Princess Charlene of Monaco stunned in a sleek, avant-garde creation by Dolce & Gabbana.

Charlene, who was born in Zimbabwe and raised in South Africa, completed her look with a romantic low bun, styled with soft 1950s-inspired waves framing her face.

Her makeup featured a classic feline winged eyeliner, a peachy blush, and a delicate pink lip – a subtle yet striking combination.

A night of glamour in Monte-Carlo

Held in the Salle des Étoiles at the Monte-Carlo Sporting, this year’s Bal de la Rose transported guests into a Caribbean-inspired setting, complete with lush tropical blooms and a chic beach café. The event’s theme, “Sunset”, added an exotic touch to the glamorous event.

While Charlene’s emerald green ensemble stood out among a sea of royalty and high society figures, she has not always been so comfortable in Monaco’s elite fashion circles.

In a 2010 interview with Tatler, she reflected on her first major social event in Monaco, saying, "My first Red Cross Ball was a baptism of fire."

She admitted, "I was used to living in a swimsuit and totally clueless about fashion. The day of the ball, I had been playing volleyball all day on the beach and didn't think about getting ready until late in the afternoon.

“I borrowed a green dress from a friend, fixed my hair myself, and painted my nails red. I looked like a Christmas tree."
