New Delhi - The Indian government banned baby food advertisements from January 1 in a bid to promote breast-feeding.

The ban covers print, television and radio spots, The Times of India said, quoting government sources.

It said the government was concerned that mothers are being influenced by slick advertisements to buy tinned baby foods and forego breast-feeding.

Nearly 15 million children are born each year in India, which has more than one billion people.

India has seen a growing market for baby foods which analysts attribute to changing lifestyles in urban areas, particularly later marriages and more women in the workforce. - Sapa-AFP
