Whatever you do, don't name your child Jack

London - Teachers can identify naughty pupils minutes into their first day of school - just by looking at the classroom register, a study has revealed.

Researchers discovered that teachers keep an eye out for children who have names such as Callum, Chelsea, Connor and Jack amid fears they are more likely to disrupt the class.

Children named Brandon, Charlie, Courtney and Chardonnay also strike fear into the nation's tutors.

A study of 3 000 school teachers formulated the Teachers Pet and Pest Name Chart, which revealed more than one in three 'expect' children with certain names to be more of a handful than others.

The study, by parenting club Bounty.com, also revealed girls called Aliesha, Casey and Crystal put teachers on edge as do boys named Kyle, Liam, Jake and Brooklyn.

Others 'troublesome' pupils include girls called Jessica, Brooke and Demi.

The poll also revealed 49 percent of teachers make assumptions about a child when they take their first look at the register in September.

The same percentage admitted a sense of foreboding when they glimpse the names at the register on the first day of term.

Interestingly, 57 percent of teachers said the naughtiest children at school are also the most popular and often make friends easier than well behaved children.

More than a third also claimed that the naughtiest children are often the brightest - and the most sensitive.

Seven out of 10 teachers agree that most children start the new school year well behaved, and only get naughtier as they get more confident in class.

And 74 percent claim that even the naughty children are good really, but often get carried away trying to entertain their friends.

The good news for teachers across the UK is that in 50 percent of cases, even the naughty children settle down as the school year progresses.

Faye Mingo, of Bounty.com, said: "Teachers are only human and make assumptions like the rest of us.

"Rightly or wrongly, most of us make assumptions based on something as simple as a person's name and we base these on our previous experiences.

"It's only natural for teachers to make judgments based on the behaviour and performance of former pupils with the same name, but I'm sure that they are happy for to be proved wrong.

"After all, there is always an exception to every rule. While many parents may worry about the name they choose for their child, all children will make a name their own."

The poll also revealed the school register often provides a source of amusement for teachers - 71 percent often have a little chuckle to themselves about the more obscure names.

And 69 percent say they often have difficulty pronouncing some of the weird and wacky names parents have chosen for their children.

Tim Burke, of the national Youth Agency, said it was human nature to make judgements about people on all difference levels.

"Most teachers should recognise this and adjust their opinions for themselves. There are two phrases which spring to mind here, one is 'give a dog a bad name' which is clearly a risk in that if we expect someone to behave in a certain way the self-fulfilling prophecy will come into play and our expectations are likely to be met.

"The other is 'a rose by any other name would smell as sweet' meaning we should not judge people by the name, but rather by the things they do and who they are."

Eric Webster, vice chairman of Family and Youth Concern, said: "We would like to think that every child is given a fair crack of the whip no matter what their academic ability.

"And I would hate to think that teachers treat children differently based on their name or address. But if those children do misbehave we would advocate strong discipline."
