Kitchen design is both an art and a science, blending functionality with aesthetics to create a space that is not only beautiful but also practical for everyday use.

A well-designed kitchen can transform the way you cook, entertain, and interact with your home.

From layout and storage solutions to materials and finishes, every detail matters.

However, even the most stunning kitchens can fall short if certain design mistakes are made.

To help you avoid common pitfalls, a seasoned kitchen designer from Black Rok Kitchen Design shares three things you should never do in your kitchen.

With over a thousand kitchens under his belt, the designer recently took to TikTok to share his expert advice on what not to do when designing or using your kitchen.

Here are his top three recommendations to ensure your kitchen remains both functional and visually appealing.

Never put a sink on the island

The kitchen island is often the centerpiece of the space, but the designer warns against placing a sink there.

“The sink is the messiest part of the kitchen,” he explains.

“Why would you want to create a beautiful kitchen and then spend your days staring at the washing up?”

Instead, he suggests keeping the island clear or using it solely for a hob (cooktop).

This approach not only maintains a clean and inviting look but also ensures the island remains a functional and clutter-free zone for cooking or socialising.

Never choose cupboards over drawers to save money

While cupboards may be cheaper than drawers, the designer strongly advises against cutting corners in this area.

“With drawers, you can instantly see and access everything,” he says.

“Cupboards, on the other hand, tend to bury items in the back.”

He emphasises that while saving money on your kitchen is fine, it shouldn’t come at the expense of functionality.

“Don’t compromise on the fundamentals of a good, hard-working kitchen,” he adds.

Never use tiles for your splashback

Tiles might seem like a classic choice for splashbacks, but the designer argues they’re not the best option.

“Tiles are just not a good choice for splashbacks,” he says.

“They look too busy, and the grout discolours over time.”

Instead, he recommends alternatives like glass, stone, or laminated panels.

“All of these are maintenance-free and give your kitchen a beautiful, elegant look without all that horrible grout,” he concludes.
