Durban - All those hours spent playing the thunee card game with your friends and family could now earn you the title of the first KwaZulu-Natal SA Thunee Championships winner as well as a large cash prize.

The KwaZulu-Natal leg of the SA Thunee Championships will be held at The Globe at Suncoast Casino over three days from September 9-11.

The event was held in Gauteng last month and will soon take place in Cape Town.

Organiser and founder of SA Thunee Championships, Praneal Singh, said the tournament was meant to take place a few years ago but had to be postponed due to Covid-19.

Singh said coming from a soccer background motivated him to choose the SA Fed Soccer Legends as this year’s beneficiaries of the proceeds of the event.

He said the federation would use the money to assist players who are going through difficult times, soccer coaching programmes, community hamper outreach projects and member functions and events.

“More NGO beneficiaries will benefit from the net profits in the future,” he added.

Singh said hundreds of teams are expected to enter the tournament from other provinces and across KZN.

“Over the first two days of preliminary rounds we are hoping that a minimum of 1 000 plus teams will play the biggest Thunee competition ever held, with a purse of R105 000 and the winner walking away with a whopping R40 000,” said Singh.

Each team consists of two players and an entry fee of R400 is required to take part. Senior citizens playing on Friday afternoon are eligible for a discount.

Breakdown of the cash prizes per team:

  • Winning Team: R40 000
  • Team Runners-up: R25 000
  • Losing Semi-finalist: R10 000
  • Losing quarter finalist: R5 000

In addition to the tournament, Singh said SA Soccer League and SA Soccer Federation will have an exhibition stand.

“Don’t forget to also visit the SA Soccer League and SA Soccer Federation exhibition stand. It’s free and all are welcome to recall local football history. You can also meet and greet some of your great local soccer legends,” he said.

He said the exhibition is a great way for the younger generations to learn the role local soccer played and its powerful history.
