Durban – EThekwini Municipality councillors have been warned to hold community engagement meetings with residents.

This comes after eThekwini speaker Thabani Nyawose revealed that community members are complaining about not being informed about council decisions taken on their behalf.

It was revealed during a council meeting on Thursday that only 8 ward councillors of the city’s 111 wards held community meetings to inform residents of the decisions taken by the council in the month of October.

Nyawose warned councillors that it is their duty to hold community meetings.

He said there have also been instances where councillors will hold meetings but not file the appropriate records with the speaker’s office.

“In the month of October, only 8 wards of the city’s 111 awards reported on community engagements. I am sure that you will all agree that this is our duty,” said Nyawose.

Nyawose said he has been receiving many complaints from residents and the media about councillors not holding community meetings.

He said holding these meetings is important as it is in these meetings that the councillors can brief the community on the decisions that have an impact on the community.
