DURBAN- eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has criticised some council leaders who indulge in public “showmanship” instead of doing the hard work of delivering services to their communities.

Kaunda said in the council that there are chairpersons of the portfolio committees who travel around the city pointing out problems and their severity and “crying out about those problems as though they are mere community members” instead of working to fix them.

“You see these chairpersons going to different areas and you will see them in social media postings, saying ‘I have been to this and that area and have found that this pipe or that pipe is leaking’.

“They go around putting themselves in the front to make it seem like they are hard-working. Meanwhile, they will leave those problems like that without attending to them, and I, as the mayor, I always have to go and fix those problems,” said Kaunda.

Kaunda implied that some of these chairpersons undermined their positions in the council.

“You will hear them crying (about service delivery problems) as though they are just mere members of the committee. Meanwhile, they have the power to fix some of those problems.”
