Durban - The eThekwini Municipality has announced that it will implement its grass cutting cycle from Monday.

It said in a statement that the grass cutting cycle will be implemented by eThekwini’s parks, recreation and culture unit and will end on October 28.

A cycle lasts an average of five weeks, and this is mainly dependent on conducive weather conditions, eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said, adding: “This means if it rains, the grass cutting programme cannot be implemented and this prolongs the cycle.”

Mayisela said illegally dumped inorganic material like bottles and tins are removed and sent to a recognised landfill site before grass cutting commences.

“It must be noted that some of the roads passing through the municipal area are maintained by the department of transport. These include the M4, M7, M13 and M19. The municipality would like to express appreciation to residents who have gone the extra mile to maintain their verges, as this creates a clean and well-maintained environment.”

Dr Simphiwe Ndlovu, the head of parks, recreation and culture said the programme was crucial in addressing the degradation of environmental assets which are severely under pressure.

“The cycle that is starting is one of eight cycles that will be implemented until July 2023. This is one of the municipality’s strategies to address the dilapidation of the city’s natural resources which has impacted negatively on the economy, environment and the well-being of residents,” Ndlovu said.
