Durban - KwaDukuza mayor Lindile Nhaca says she will visit the families of four people who died on Wednesday in a collision involving a minibus and a bakkie on the N2 northbound lane near the Umvoti bridge.

Nhaca said she would visit the families to convey her condolences and to offer support and comfort.

“This disturbing road carnage comes at a time where we have been experiencing a decline in fatalities on our roads. This accident alone underlines the huge task ahead as we enter October for Transport Month, a period which will be used to raise awareness about road safety in preparation for the festive season.”

Nhaca added that the cause of the accident remained unclear.

“It is alleged that the bakkie which was heading south towards the Umvoti Tollgate veered off to the northbound lane and collided with a minibus ferrying workers. The driver of the bakkie lost his life on the scene together with three others. The minibus was travelling from Shayamoya to the KwaDukuza Central Business District.”

Nhaca said road users needed to adhere to the rules of the road.

“While there’s a great need to emphasise a message of caution and adherence to the rules of the road to all users, I accordingly wish to send my words of condolences to the families, friends and colleagues. I also wish for a speedy recovery for those who sustained injuries.”
