Durban – On his return to the eThekwini Metro, former councillor Zwakele Mncwango plans to call for the removal of the city leadership amid the infrastructure failures that have led to sewer pollution of the city’s beaches.

Mncwango told The Mercury recently that he will be calling for a motion of no confidence in the city’s leadership for their response to the crises.

Mncwango made his return to the council where he once held a post as exco member for the DA. He returns as a proportional representative (PR) councillor for ActionSA, which said that it was pleased to announce his return to eThekwini. He is the party’s provincial chairperson.

“We are discussing (in ActionSA caucus) calling for a vote of no confidence in the city leadership,” he said, adding that it was “mind boggling” that only the city official (recently suspended head of supply chain) had been blamed for the failure to effectively contain the crises.

Mncwango, it seems, will be replacing Busi Radebe, who resigned recently. She had joined a few months ago after the then councillor Makhosi Khoza was forced out amid public clashes with the party's founder Herman Mashaba.

In a statement, ActionSA said: “In considering the plethora of infrastructure failures in eThekwini, ActionSA’s senate believes it is in the best interest of our party that Mncwango’s experience be drawn upon to fight for the service delivery needs of residents.

It said throughout the years, Mncwango had shown strong leadership in all spheres of government.

“Already his role in fighting for the resolution of the eThekwini sewage crises has been telling – and this is the standard that can now be expected from ActionSA in eThekwini.

“Currently, the people of eThekwini are desperate for strong leadership,” said the statement, adding that the other political parties in the council have failed to hold the eThekwini accountable for the many pressing failures.
