Durban – A 26-year-old man appeared at the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court today for allegedly attacking and robbing an on-duty detective at the scene of a murder in KwaMashu last month.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the suspect was facing charges of robbery and attempted murder.

According to Gwala, on October 2, a detective was attending a murder scene in KwaMashu Hostel along Jabula Road when he was attacked.

“While he was waiting for his colleague he was robbed at gunpoint of his service pistol,” she said.

Gwala said another police officer responded and there was a shootout. The suspect managed to escape.

She said the suspect was arrested by KwaMashu police on Monday.

“During his arrest, he was searched and found in possession of a pistol, as well as 15 rounds of ammunition,” she said.

In an separate earlier matter, IOL reported that two police officers were robbed of their service firearms and locked in the back of their bakkie in Wells Estate, Gqeberha, in August.

According to the report, the officers were attending to a murder scene when they were robbed by three armed men.

“They were robbed of their firearms, cellphones and wallets. The members were then placed in the back of the police van and the suspects drove off with them inside the police vehicle," Eastern Cape SAPS spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said at the time.
