Durban - A 38-year-old woman was raped in the same room as her two-year-old son after three robbers invaded her home in Buffelsdraai near Verualm in KwaZulu-Natal in the early hours of Thursday morning.
According to Reaction Unit SA spokesperson Prem Balram, Rusa received a call for assistance at approximately 1.16am.
Balram said that, when reaction officers arrived at the scene, they established that three suspects had forcefully gained entry to the victim’s room while she was asleep next to her child.
He said the woman was confronted by one of the suspects who held her at gunpoint while his accomplices searched the house for valuables.
“He then sexually assaulted her when she fought back,” said Balram.
The suspect fired a shot before they exited her room, he said.
“The robbers continued kicking in doors leading to other rooms which were rented by other tenants,” said Balram.
Balram said the robbers stole cash, cellphones, TVs and other household items, which were loaded into an awaiting white VW Polo with an unknown registration.
“Reaction officers conducted an extensive search for the suspects. However, no arrests were made,” he said.
He said no other injuries were reported.
Provincial police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said charges of house robbery and rape had been opened at Verulam police station for investigation.
Ngcobo said it was alleged that in the early hours of the morning three victims were sleeping at their place of residence in the Buffelsdraai area when an unknown suspect forced the door open and robbed them of their belongings.
“A female victim was also raped by the suspect,” she said.
