Durban - Armed suspects who robbed fibre installers moments before invading a home in Trenance Park in the Amaotana area near Verulam opened fire on the workers after they attempted to intervene on Thursday.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram, four men in a white VW Polo sedan with an NU registration are being sought for two separate robberies that occurred on Marula Circle in Trenance Park on Thursday morning.

Balram said they received multiple calls from the public reporting a shoot-out in the area.

He said reaction officers were immediately dispatched to the scene and arrived at about 10.08am.

“It was established that the occupants of the VW Polo robbed fibre installers of spades and picks before they entered a property and held up a family including three children aged between 4 and 7,” said Balram.

Balram said the robbers demanded cellphones, jewellery and cash from the family.

They were disturbed by the fibre installers, who attempted to confront them, he said.

“The suspects stole two Huawei cellphones from the residence before they exited the house and fired shots at the construction company employees,” he said.

He added that one 9mm bullet and a spent cartridge were recovered at the scene.

Balram confirmed that no injuries were reported.

Police were approached for comment.
