Johannesburg - We're convinced that the S in SVR stands for Sledgehammer, the most appropriate one-word description we could come up with for the Range Rover Sport SVR.
It's a monolithic 2.3 ton beetlecrusher with a frontal area of close to two square metres and all the aerodynamic finesse of a brick outhouse, powered by a supercharged five-litre V8 that's good for 405kW and 680Nm and a 0-100km/h charge in 4.5 seconds flat.
It also has special sports seats, as well as Land Rover's first two-stage active exhaust system with electronic valves that keep it quiet around the sleepy suburbs, but give it real authority when you put your foot down.
JAGUAR LAND ROVER PERFORMANCE DIVISION
An eight-speed ZF auto transmission drives all four wheels (21-inch rims with 275/45 all-terrain rubber) and the electronic speed limiter doesn't kick in until 260km/h; a prototype has been round the infamous Nurburgring in 8m14s, in full road trim.
OK, we know SVR stands for Special Vehicles Racing, Jaguar Land Rover's performance skunk works; we also know this is the very first SVR model and that it's here in South Africa now at R1 885 925 including VAT and CO2 taxes.
