Four suspects were fatally wounded during a shootout with police in Duffs Road, along Dumisani Makhaye Drive, KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday.
The incident unfolded when officers intercepted the suspects' vehicle as it was navigating Lark Road, heading towards Dumisani Makhaye Drive.
According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza, the confrontation began when the suspects opened fire upon sighting the police.
The officers returned fire, resulting in three suspects being killed on the spot.
He said a thorough search in the vicinity led to the discovery of the fourth suspect's body, who had attempted to flee but succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained in the exchange.
Magwaza confirmed that the suspects were equipped with three firearms during this tense encounter and praised the police for their safety during the shootout, stating, "No police officer was injured."
This incident is significant as the suspects have been linked to numerous criminal activities, including a string of murders, robberies, and extortion cases in the Ethekwini District.
Magwaza added that police are now in the process of profiling the deceased to establish any possible connections to other crimes.
