How to beat ATM crooks at their own game

All banks implement security measures to dilute the increase in ATM fraud that always occurs at holiday time, but you can also protect yourself.

Most important, make sure you know how to cancel your card or report it lost or stolen to your bank. Other safety measures recommended by Edgar Blomeyer of First National Bank include:

* Don't think it can't happen to you; most methods used to deprive you of your card depend on you not being totally alert;

* Don't lose concentration because you are away from home. Even for those staying at home it's easy to be casual during a holiday, particularly when you have more money than usual in your account thanks to 13th cheques and bonuses;

* Daily ATM withdrawal limits are normally R1 000 but can be reduced easily at the machine. If you need more than the new reduced amount you can get it by going to a teller inside the branch;

* Move some cash into an investment account. You could put it on a time deposit for 32 days or open a separate savings account. Even if criminals access your account they will not be able to touch your investment accounts if they are not linked to your card;

* Keep your PIN number secret. To gain access to your account via the ATM, the criminal must have your PIN and your card; if he can't see you key in your number your card is worthless to him;

* Always stand near the ATM when keying in your PIN. If possible take someone with you to "protect your back";

* If anyone asks for your pin be instantly suspicious. No employee of any bank will ask for your secret number either in person or over the phone;

* Never keep a note of your PIN with your card;

* Be particularly on your guard if you feel you are being crowded or jostled or someone is trying to get your attention;

* Never help a stranger at an ATM, especially someone suggesting you try your card "as his doesn't seem to be working". If you have difficulties operating the ATM cancel the transaction. Never let anyone else handle your card;

* Make sure the card in your possession is your own immediately before and after each transaction. The cards have a blank strip on the back, and you can mark it to make the card easily identifiable as yours. If it is not, cancel your card immediately at the ATM.
