Pretoria - The City of Tshwane will establish new driving licence testing centres in Ga-Rankuwa.
The MMC for Roads and Transport, Dikeledi Selowa, told the Pretoria News that the City was waiting for the Road Traffic Management Corporation to finalise the process.
She said her department recorded a steady increase in customers across its licence and testing centres over the last quarter of the year, which ended on June 30.
From April to June, they recorded 59 830 transactions, which involved issuing 9 894 driving licences and 7 050 learner licences, and making 11 093 learner licence bookings. Other transactions involved driving licence bookings and issuing duplicates.
For the period from March to June, 267 077 vehicles were registered and 448 378 were licensed.
Selowa said: “These numbers indicate that our centres are a preferred choice for most of Gauteng and neighbouring provinces.
“I’d like to urge customers to continue to use the officials inside our centres and not fall victim to scammers posing as runners. Residents may visit any of our licensing and testing centres across the regions for all vehicle registration needs. All centres are cashless.”
Driving school operator Simon Ramphekwa said this was great news as it would give him and others more business opportunities and relieve the pressure on booking queues.
“I believe this will be a positive contribution to the township economy because local people will find work and small businesses owners, like photographers and internet café owners, will find work.”
But Casper Mashigo, who led demonstrations earlier this year calling for the online booking system to be amended, was sceptical.
“The government only does something like this when it also stands to benefit from the money that will be generated by such a development,” he said.
