The Dog House Craft Café and Basset Breweries
Owners Natalie Danks and Andy Turner have established a homemade food and craft beer business in the Yellowwood Nature Reserve indigenous forest and gardens. The restaurant offers a wide selection of homemade meals from pot pies to pizzas made in a wood-fired oven, gourmet sandwiches and burgers, while the Basset Breweries’ craft beer is available on tap. Danks also makes gin from a recipe which she inherited from her grandmother.

Pennington Hospice Shop
The Khanya Hospice provides free palliative care to the terminally ill, with the Pennington Hospice Shop its main source of income. The facility relies on volunteers to staff the shop and donations of goods for selling.

Developed on the property sugar cane magnate Sir Frank Reynolds acquired in 1918, the Umdoni Park Golf Course boasts spectacular views over the Indian Ocean, while the restaurant and clubhouse are open to anyone seeking a hearty meal. Accommodation is available either in the Trust Cottage and Annex (self-catering) or in Botha House (bed and breakfast in the main house and self-catering in the cottage).

Peace and quiet
Residents benefit from the tranquillity of a seaside lifestyle. The area does not experience the crime levels associated with larger towns, while bush buck, porcupines and bush pigs are as likely to be the morning traffic – such as it is – as cars. There are also several world-class golf courses within an accessible radius.

Location
Pennington is 90km south of Umhlanga, Durban’s new central business district, making it feasible for younger families to live in the town and commute to work. The N2 national freeway bypasses the town but is accessible from Park Rynie 10km away
