Friends, family, and colleagues of the beloved comedian and actor Ebenheazer “Ebby” Dibakwane gathered to pay their final respects during a heartfelt funeral service held on Friday in Maggiesdal, Mbombela, Nelspruit.

The Dibakwane family announced the tragic news of his passing, revealing he died by suicide at 31.

A statement from the family expressed immense gratitude for the outpouring of love and support they received during this distressing time.

They emphasised the importance of mental health awareness, stating, “Preliminary evidence suggests that Ebby died by suicide, which we expect will be confirmed by the post-mortem examination. We are touched and immensely grateful for the outpouring of love, comfort, and support that we have been receiving from many. While his passing is devastating for us and for many who loved him, it is our prayer that this tragedy may remind all of us of the need to look out for each other, while taking care of our own mental health, including seeking professional help where necessary.”

As a beloved figure known for his infectious humour and vibrant personality, Ebby’s passing has left an indelible mark on both the entertainment world and the hearts of those who knew him.

His brother Lesedi, speaking at the service, shared heartfelt memories, stating, “This is going to be a tough one, but bear with me. You know Ebby loved the party, but Ebenheazer not this kind of party, bra. It still feels like a bad joke that he is going to come out of nowhere.”

Lesedi went on to describe the unique bond they shared, saying, “Ebby understood the chain of command very well. Ebby was a brilliant storyteller from a young age, witty and funny. He was always trying to find a smart way out.”

“What stood out the most was how Ebby treated and spoke to us with utmost respect.”

“My brother, you laughed and made people laugh. And must have given death a hell of a scare because you lived such a vibrant and intentional life. You pursued everything with so much passion. You were never half-hearted. You gave it everything.”

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) also weighed in on the tragedy, remarking that Ebby’s death serves as a stark reminder that mental health struggles can affect anyone.

“The tragic passing of Ebenhaezer Dibakwane is a heartbreaking reminder that mental health struggles do not discriminate; depression and suicide can affect anyone, regardless of age, race, gender, or social status. Celebrities may seem to have it all, but behind the spotlight, they also face personal battles, pressures, and struggles just like anyone else. This loss highlights the importance of checking in on our loved ones, even those who seem the happiest; sometimes, the brightest smiles hide the deepest pain. SADAG urges everyone to reach out, have real conversations, and remind those around you that they are not alone. If you or someone you know is struggling, please seek help, support is available,” the organisation stated.

They urged individuals to reach out to loved ones, suggesting that sometimes, the brightest smiles conceal the deepest pain.
