Johannesburg - Fashion labels are acclaimed for dipping into yesteryear for current in-vogue styles and trends.

And international denim design house G-Star RAW has done exactly that for their newest capsule collection, which features limited-edition styles straight from the year 2000.

“No edits, no additions, just pure original G-Star styles from Y2K,” the Dutch designer clothing company said of its range.

Some of the new range’s highlights include cropped army pants, a strapless denim mini dress and a cropped logo tee.

This capsule with nostalgic design elements was curated by acclaimed fashion model Rose Bertram. The Belgian model, who was born in 1994, grew up through the ’00s era, with her style inevitably inspired by that time. With Y2K inspiring her daily outfits, G-Star assigned her to curate their new capsule collection.

"I love the ’00s and when G-Star asked me to curate the Y2K collection, directly from their archive, I had to say yes,” Bertram said.

“It was super inspiring because I love the brand and the era. I picked my favourite original designs, all from the year 2000 and they've been recreated without any edits or additions, so we're really bringing Y2K into 2022.”

The Y2K Revival

Born in 1989, G-Star RAW’s first years were lived through the hedonistic ’90s and ’00s. It was a time of cultural relevance, when the internet was born and low-rise jeans were worn. “And with the Y2K trend growing more prevalent every month, it seems a straight-forward decision for G-Star to relaunch 11 original Y2K styles – personally hand-picked by Bertram – without any edits or additions,” the design house said.

They added that part of remaking the complete replicas was to satisfy everyone’s nostalgic needs and help them relive those iconic years.

Meanwhile, internationally acclaimed model, actress and singer Cara Delevingne is the face of the new G-Star Hardcore Denim campaign.

With a female talent to front the campaign, the luxury denim design house believes she fits in perfectly with the brand’s tradition of working with unique talents.

“Delevingne is a ‘true original’ through her rebellious, outspoken character and her ability to show different aspects to her personality,” G-Star RAW said.

Unexpected Perspectives

The G-Star campaign introduces a new denim collection presenting G-Star’s signature designs which strive to challenge the norm. Set in an abstract world, without rules or logic, Delevingne features alongside the other models moving through surreal cities.

“Within the abstract setting, you'll see unexpected dimensions, disruptive perspectives and unusual gravitational forces,” the denim designers said.

New Collection, New Fits

The British top model is rocking two new denim fits for women: The Stray and Type 49. The Stray is a straight fit with an ultra high rise and is inspired by the iconic ’50s girl gangs who rebelled against austerity. With a youthful, androgynous vibe, it offers a rebellious edge to a classic style.

For both men and women, the Type 49 brings a modernity to an old-soul design, complete with a high rise and a relaxed straight leg. The FW22 collection pushes the boundaries of G-Star’s signature denim design, in a campaign where Hardcore Denim goes beyond reality.

Denim Essentials

G-Star is denim and for this reason, the brand is launching a collection of their timeless denim must-haves this season: Denim Essentials. The capsule collection contains denim classics that will feature every season. From a boyfriend-fit denim vest to the Arc 3D jeans, each one of these staple pieces is available to wear through the years.

The G-Star RAW Hardcore Denim collection as well as the Y2K capsule collection is now available to purchase in stores and via g-star.com.
