Mlangeni-Nawa, who passed away at the age of 65, left behind a legacy that spanned more than three decades, captivating audiences not only in South Africa but across the continent and beyond.
The actor, known for his legendary roles, first captured the nation's hearts as Laqhasha in the beloved series Sgudi Snaysi.
This role endeared him to many, bringing laughter and thoughtful reflection to viewers.
However, it was his portrayal of Zebedee "Bra Zeb" Matabane on Isidingo that cemented his status as a household name, making his contribution to South African television truly unforgettable.
Mlangeni-Nawa's family confirmed his passing on April 16, expressing their heartbreak: “It is with deep heartbreak that we share the passing of our beloved father, Don Mlangeni-Nawa. He was the heart of our family – a loving father, brother, and friend. To the world, he was a gifted and respected actor whose presence lit up every stage and screen he graced. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the stories he told, and the love he gave so freely.”
The Gauteng Legislature's Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts, Culture & Recreation (SACR) has also expressed its condolences.
Chairperson Disebo Tlebere reflected on Mlangeni's immense talent, stating, “We are profoundly saddened by the passing of Don Mlangeni-Nawa, who still had so much to contribute to the entertainment industry in Gauteng, South Africa, and indeed, the world.”
Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, joined the chorus of accolades for Mlangeni, noting his contributions as a cultural icon. "Born on 7 June 1959 in Boksburg, Don Mlangeni was more than just an actor; he was a cultural icon, storyteller and a mirror through which we saw our own struggles, joys and triumphs,” he said.
McKenzie remembered growing up watching Mlangeni and emphasised, “I grew up watching a true giant of our television screens.”
For nearly two decades, Malngeni-Nawa was synonymous with South Africa’s most popular soapie, captivating viewers from all walks of life.
He received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the Golden Horn Award for Best Actor in a TV Soap in 2006, recognising his significant impact on the industry.
In addition to his roles as Laqhasha and Bra Zeb, he portrayed David in Ubambo Lwami, Zakhe in Hlala Kwabafileyo, and Moseki in The Throne, all performances that showcased his range and depth as an actor.
