MI Cape Town extended their stellar form on the field to knock the Pretoria Capitals out of the SA20, beating them 27 runs at Centurion on Friday night.
Cape Town went in to bat first and got off to a good start with Rassie van de Dussen and Ryan Rickelton getting the 50 up in 5.4 overs.
Capitals paceman Gideon Peters was the first to strike, breaking Cape Towns 45-run opening partnership. Colin Ingram arrived at the crease and put on a little show, dispatching Senuran Muthusamy out of the stadium with a massive 6.
The very next ball Muthusamy removed Ingram from the crease with a spectulor caught and bowled effort.
The fall of Ingram was the start of a beautifully knocked 142 run partnership from 71 balls between Reeza Hendricks and Dewald Brevis.
Both Brevis and Hendricks looked indestructible at the crease, thrashing the Capitals attack all over the park.
Brevis and Hendricks put up a 100 run partnership after 17.2 overs but play was called off an over later due to bad weather. Play resumed around 35 minutes later.
The pair came out for the last two overs and kept their momentum going, pushing the run rate up to 11.23 in the last two overs. Cape Town continued to pile the pressure on Capital bowlers in the tail end and after 20 overs, reached 222/3.
The Capitals went into bat and looked confident out of the blocks after they lost their first wicket, Steve Stolk.
Will Smeed joined Will Jacks at the crease and instilled hope back into the Centurion crowd, letting his hands fly on the off side due to some loose bowling.
Pretoria were on 67/1 after their powerplay innings. After 10 overs, the Capitals were at 93/2 and around 10 runs ahead of Cape Town at this stage.
After 11 overs, Pretoria needed 126 runs from 56 balls with 7 wickets in hand, with the game still pretty much undecided. Smeed continued smacking Cape Town around, putting up a polished 50 before he was removed by man of the match, Dewald Brevis.
Brevis and Hendricks teamed up once again to remove Smeed from the crease.
The Capitals lost some steam after the fall of Smeed, and continued to let the run rate slip below the required figure.
After 16 overs, the Capitals reached 148/5 and the game appeared to be slipping away until Ashton Turner let a couple fly, giving the home crowd something to cheer for.
But the Capitals left a little too much for the end, and needed 42 runs of the last over, putting an end to their 2025 SA20 season.
