As the United Rugby Championship prepares to resume, numerous players at the South African franchises will look to assert themselves and secure spots in Rassie Erasmus’ first Springbok squad of 2025.

With key international Tests against Italy and Georgia looming in July, there will be pressure on individual players as they chase to enhance their cases for national selection.

For the Sharks, one stand-out player is centre Jurenzo Julius, affectionately nicknamed ‘The Boogieman’.

Known for his dynamic attacking prowess and impressive defensive work-rate, Julius has emerged as a revelation for the Durban franchise.

His agility, quick footwork and ability to exploit gaps make him a strong candidate for the national side, especially if given a consistent starting role at outside centre during the critical run-in of the URC.

Another name to keep an eye on is Ethan Hooker, whose versatility has made him an invaluable asset to the Sharks. His ability to excel across various backline positions could boost his chances for national honours.

Over at the Bulls, Reinhardt Ludwig offers similar versatility, adeptly playing both lock and flanker.

With injuries depleting the squad, including key players Elrigh Louw and Ruan Nortjé, Ludwig’s performances in these pivotal closing matches could elevate him in the eyes of the Springbok coaches.

Meanwhile, scrumhalf Embrose Papier is enjoying a renaissance, delivering crisp service and demonstrating impressive sniping abilities.

His evolving game management might just position him as a strong contender ahead of the international season.

In Cape Town, the Stormers face a challenging season, yet hooker André-Hugo Venter has stood out with his relentless work-rate and commitment.

To further his national ambitions, sharpening his lineout-throwing will be critical.

Alongside him, winger Suleiman Hartzenberg has offered consistency on the flanks, showcasing exceptional vision when attacking space. His ability to leap and compete for high kicks is another arrow in his quiver.

The possible loose-forward vacancy caused by Louw’s injury could see Lions captain Francke Horn eyeing selection too.

Horn has long been knocking on the Boks’ door, and the next couple of crucial local games may give him a chance to finally showcase his capabilities.

Lions flyer Edwill van der Merwe is another player deserving of mention. His impressive form and stand-out try-scoring have made him a player to watch, particularly as he aims to add to his lone Bok cap.

The stage is set for an intriguing tussle between the South African players, not just for tournament glory for their teams, but also for a place in the Springbok squad.
