Golden Arrows are gearing up to complete an impressive league double over Kaizer Chiefs as they prepare to host the Soweto giants at Moses Mabhida Stadium this Saturday at 3.30pm.

Abafana Bes’thende, fresh from their earlier triumphs over Chiefs, will be looking to replicate their 2021/22 feat, where they secured back-to-back wins in the league.

Under the tactical leadership of coaches Vusumuzi Vilakazi and Mabhuti Khenyeza, Golden Arrows pulled off a stunning 1-0 victory at FNB Stadium in the first round before completing the job with a dramatic 2-1 comeback at their home ground in KwaMashu. In their previous encounter back in January, Arrows managed to edge past Chiefs with a 1-0 win, thanks to a crucial goal from Gladwin Shitolo.

This time around, Arrows are brimming with confidence and eager to complete what would be their second double over Chiefs in the space of three years. Currently, sitting in 10th place on the log, Golden Arrows find themselves just five points behind eighth-placed Chiefs, with three games in hand. The race for a top-eight finish is heating up, and this weekend’s clash presents an opportunity for Arrows to close the gap and push for a higher position.

Despite the pressure, Arrows will hope to continue their solid form and build on the momentum they gathered before the international break. The hosts are also expected to arrive on the pitch with their chests puffed out, having beaten Amakhosi five out of the last seven times the two teams have met, with the Soweto giants looking as vulnerable as ever.

With Manqoba Mngqithi now at the helm, having taken charge just under a month ago, the dynamics at Arrows have changed.

Mngqithi, who enjoyed success at Mamelodi Sundowns for over a decade, will bring a new edge to the team. His knowledge of Arrows’ style, having started his top-flight career with the club, coupled with his experience at Sundowns, could provide a fresh approach to the team’s tactics.

However, as the Betway Premiership returns following the Fifa international break, Arrows are not without their challenges.

Two key players, Keenan Phillips and Nhlanhla Zwane, will be missing from the squad due to suspension. Both players received their fourth yellow cards of the season in Arrows’ recent game against Magesi FC, making them unavailable for the showdown with Chiefs.

Nonetheless, Arrows will be determined to take the fight to Amakhosi despite the absences. With 24 points from 22 games, Arrows are eyeing a strong finish to the season, while Chiefs, with 29 points, are looking to strengthen their position in the top eight.

Saturday’s game promises to be an exciting encounter, with Arrows eager to make history and continue their fine form against one of the most storied clubs in South African football.
