Soccer fans were expected to be notified from Wednesday if their World Cup ticket applications were successful.

Fifa was still collating the figures from the random draw on Tuesday.

More than a million application forms from 192 countries were received for the third ticketing phase, which closed on January. A million tickets for all four categories were made available for the third phase.

Rich Mkhondo, 2010 local organising committee spokesman, said applicants could expect to be notified of the status of their application from Wednesday.

There was huge interest from South African residents, who accounted for 79 percent of the total applications received (958 381) in the third phase. This represented an increase of 24.9 percent in applications from South African residents, when compared to the earlier ticketing stages.

Apart from the hosts, the US led the ticketing standings for the third phase with 50 217 applications, followed by the UK (41 529), Australia (15 523), Mexico (14 804), Germany (14 647) and Brazil (10 767).

The next phase will start on February 9 and end April 7. During these 58 days - a first come, first served phase - more than 400 000 tickets will be available. People may apply on Fifa's website or at any FNB branch.

From April 15, local fans will be able to buy World Cup tickets at ticketing centres in each host city. The hotline for domestic customers is 083 123 2010.
