Durban — Markers and examination assistants employed during the 2024 National Senior Certificate marking process were paid on Monday.

The department said marking commenced on December 1, 2024, in 32 marking centres with 9 390 markers appointed and finished on December 10, 2024, meeting the deadline envisaged by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education (DOE). Thus far, the KZN DOE has paid 9 390 markers and examination assistants. The second run will be on January 6, 2025.

The KZN DOE MEC Sipho Hlomuka said he honoured his commitment to ensuring the timely payment of markers and examination assistants. Hlomuka said this milestone serves as a testament to the department’s commitment to ensuring that the welfare of its dedicated staff remains a top priority.

Hlomuka had promised to ensure all payments would be finalised before December 24, 2024, and on Monday the department proudly affirmed the fulfilment of this pledge.

“Our markers and assistants play a critical role in safeguarding the integrity of our education system by ensuring the accurate and timely processing of learners' examination scripts. Their dedication and hard work deserve recognition, and we are committed to supporting them in every way possible,” Hlomuka said.

The department extended its gratitude to all stakeholders who contributed to this achievement, ensuring that no delays were encountered in the payment process.

The department said this accomplishment underscores their dedication to transparency, efficiency, and service excellence.

Exams lasted six weeks with the first paper, written on October 21. The last exam was written on November 27.

Additionally, Hlomuka wished all markers, examination assistants, and their families a joyous festive season and a prosperous New Year.
