A compilation of soul-stirring Murugan bhajans has been released just in time for Kavady by singer and musician, Kamani Moodley.
Moodley, who is a Carnatic and devotional singer, recorded the Kavady collection of songs titled Azhaga Muruga (Beautiful Muruga) with music production by Deshan Styler, the son of singer Beama Naidoo.
This CD is also special because there is a Telugu and a Hindi Muruga song.
Moodley has recorded several albums over the years in Tamil and Telugu, especially on her guru, Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
She hails from devout family of musicians and began singing at the age of eight, when she took part in her first Tamil Eisteddfod.
“My mother, Saras, who was a Tamil teacher at the time, was my inspiration. She constantly motivated and encouraged me to sing. I initially sang after listening to various tapes and records but later I learnt to write music using the scale. I have decided to dedicate Azhaga Muruga to my beloved late mother, who was herself a great devotee of Lord Muruga,” said Moodley.
The highlight of her career was securing a scholarship from the Natal Tamil Vedic Society in 1996 to study music in Chennai under Seetha Rajan.
A proficient harmonium player, Moodley has also run her own music school for several years. Azhaga Muruga will be launched on Lotus FM by Veena Lutchman. For more information, call her at 074 860 4683.
