Bloemfontein – A 75-year-old woman was killed and two other people seriously injured when a bakkie ran them over in Thabong in Welkom, police said on Monday.
Free State police’s Sergeant Mamello Mokhuoane said the incident took place on Friday evening in the Dichocolateng area of the township.
According to police, a 13-year-old boy was playing in a yard while the 75-year-old woman Agnes Molelekeng and a 52-year-old woman Palesa Mosia were passing by after a visit to a family member in the Orange Grove area.
A white Colt bakkie drove by, lost control, and hit both women as well as the boy.
“The driver tried to flee the scene and was caught by angry community members who brutally assaulted him,” said Mokhuoane.
The driver of the car, Mosia, and the boy were all rushed to hospitals in Welkom.
“The 75-year-old woman who was found later underneath the car [and] was certified dead at the scene,” said Mokhuoane.
He added: “The driver, who is at the hospital under police guard, could not produce a driver’s licence.”
The driver faces a charge of culpable homicide.
