Johannesburg – Gift of the Givers said on Wednesday that its teams had began water distribution in the Free State in areas that had not received any water supplies.
The largest disaster relief organisation said working with disaster management they had started distributing water in the Xhariep District, which includes Smithfield, Reddersburg, Edenbridge, Thompsburg, Jaggersfontein, Fauresmith and a number of smaller localities.
Gift of the Givers said it was taking the water to schools, hospitals, frail care centres and local communities.
“Gift of the Givers will have six of its trucks and two water tankers in Bloemfontein tomorrow (Thursday).The contents include 22 x 5000L and 10 x 1000L Jojo tanks, 15000 x 20L water containers, 130 000L bottled water, three tons soup, biscuits, diapers, wet wipes, sweets, juice, stationery and school uniforms,” the organisation said adding that “additional supplies will follow”.
Gift of Givers said the primary response was the provision of water by means of tankers and boreholes.
A contract has been given to sink two new boreholes at a cost of R125 000 each. Drilling begins Thursday.
The organisation said the sinking of more boreholes was being considered to aliviate the water crisis in the province.
“Water will be pumped from the borehole into the tanker, from there into the Jojo tanks and into the buckets. We are trying to secure more water tankers,” the Gift of the Givers said in a statement.
