One in four can’t afford a holiday

How you travel is a little like how you carry off fashion - nailing an image of easy elegance generally takes the commitment of an uptight control freak.

London - A rising number of Britons are missing out on holidays because they cannot afford it, reveals a survey.

In the last year, nearly a quarter did not go on any breaks compared to a tenth in 2011.

The change is most marked in those on tight budgets. Just under half of low earners, the jobless or those relying on state pensions will go away this year. In 2011, it was 81 percent.

The better-off, however, are enjoying more holidays, pushing the average number of trips at home and abroad in the past year to 3.2 from 3.0 in the previous 12 months.

Those in the highest social grade typically took eight breaks in the past year, compared to 7.4 four years ago.

Londoners take the most, averaging 4.4 annually followed by the North West, while residents of Northern Ireland take the least at 1.8 a year.

Results of the poll of 2 003 adults were reported in 2015 trends report from the travel agents’ body ABTA.
