London - Frightened air passengers described on Monday how their planes were forced to abort landings in Storm Katie.

More than 100 flights in and out of Gatwick and Heathrow were cancelled or diverted.

Passenger Dan Prance branded his journey home from Budapest the “worst flight of my life” and said passengers were so relieved when they finally touched down that many broke down in tears.

Mr Prance, from London, who works in television, said several passengers became ill as the easyJet flight was forced to circle “for a further bumpy hour” before it diverted to Birmingham.

“The whole ordeal was horrendous. I’ve never had anything like it,” he added.

Arnon Woolfson, 46, was flying to Gatwick with his family after a wedding in Israel when their plane was hit by the storm and, after a failed landing bid, also diverted to Birmingham.

He said: “The plane was descending and at the very last minute as we came down it pulled up. It was clearly not going to plan.

“The plane was not just going up and down, it was going sideways. There were a lot of crosswinds – it was a mess. There was zero visibility and really heavy wind and rain.”

Giulia Cortigiano, 28, an office manager from London, said her Emirates flight from Dubai touched down at Gatwick on the second attempt after being hit by strong winds:”‘I was terrified. People were panicking, somebody was sick. When you hear someone being sick you just think, ‘Oh my God’.”
