Cape Town - Forty gymnasts need your help to make it to the South African Gym Games in Centurion.

For some of the parents of children at Cedar Gymnastics in Mitchells Plain, finances have been tight since the Covid-19, leaving many households without an income or living from hand to mouth.

But despite their financial hardships, these children are stopping at nothing to reach their dreams.

This month they took part in the Western Cape Championships held in Stellenbosch.

Forty of their gymnasts have made it through to the South African Gym Games which will take place from October 1 – 9.

From acrobatics to group demonstrations, the children are determined to shine at the tournament.

They have begun raising funds to help foot the bill, which is estimated to be R5 000 for each child.

Natasha Frazer, the club’s public relations officer, said the children had thrived despite the challenges that parents had rallied together to make sure no one was left behind.

Frazer’s 7-year-old daughter is one of the gymnasts.

“In August, they competed at the Western Cape Championships and they are now not representing the club but the province,” she said.

“They are now set for the SA Gym Games and we do not want to leave anyone behind. Many of the households are suffering financially and in some cases the parents are not working. These children are disciplined and their coaches make sure they are safe and they are very professional.”

She said the club was hosting a fund-raising show, “This Is Us”, on September 30 to show what their children endured in the community, through dance and acrobatics.

Naeem Abrahams, co-owner and chairperson of the club, said they were working hard to reach their goals.

“We have been hosting fund-raising events over the past two to three months.

“Sadly we were able to raise about less than 10% of the total amount needed.”
