As a black woman, I know the struggle all too well when seasonal changes creep in. Our beautiful sun-kissed glow can sometimes turn into a ghostly dull situation. And let’s not even get started on the havoc the colder months can wreak on our skin barrier!

South Africa’s autumn weather, with its chilly mornings and dry winds, isn’t exactly kind to our skin. But here’s the thing: while many of us are pros at switching up our makeup routines, we often forget that our skincare routine also needs a seasonal upgrade.

The truth is, your skin’s needs change with the weather, and maintaining that dewy, radiant glow requires a little extra tender, loving, care during the cooler months.

Why does your skincare routine need to change? Autumn in SA can be tough on your skin.

Fluctuating temperatures, harsh winds, and decreased humidity leave your skin feeling dry, tight, and sometimes even flaky. Your skin barrier, your body’s natural defence system, takes the brunt of these changes, leading to dryness, sensitivity, and, for some of us, breakouts.

“Your skin barrier plays a critical role in protecting you from environmental stressors and preventing water loss. If it’s compromised, you’ll notice excessive dryness, dehydration, and increased sensitivity," notes Dr Alek Nikolic, a top aesthetic medical practitioner and founder of SkinMiles.

Think of your skin barrier as your first line of defence. It locks in moisture, keeps out harmful bacteria, and helps regulate inflammation. When it’s healthy, your skin is soft, hydrated, and glowing. But when it’s struggling? Say hello to dullness, irritation, and uneven texture.

So, how do you keep your skin happy and healthy as the seasons change? The key is to focus on hydration, protection, and gentle care. The barrier-repair skincare trend is gaining momentum worldwide and for good reason. It’s exactly what our skin needs during the cooler months.

Invest in a rich, hydrating moisturiser to combat dryness. Look for products with ceramides, glycerine, or hyaluronic acid.

Here’s a breakdown of the must-have ingredients and products to add to your routine:

1. Ceramides

Ceramides are like the building blocks of your skin barrier. They help retain moisture and repair your skin’s natural defences.

Recommendations:

  • CeraVe hydrating hyaluronic acid serum.
  • SKIN Functional impaired barrier and dry skin repair.

2. Hyaluronic acid

This ingredient is a game-changer for dehydrated skin. It attracts and locks in moisture, leaving your skin plump and supple.

3. Peptides: anti-ageing and repair in one

Peptides strengthen your skin and promote collagen production, keeping your skin firm and resilient.

Recommendations:

  • Youth Lab peptides reload all-in-one serum.
  • Dermaquest new peptide nourishing cream.
  • Lelive glow + restore oil elixir.

4. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is your go-to for fighting free radicals and maintaining an even skin tone. It also strengthens your skin barrier and enhances your natural glow.

Recommendations:

  • Eucerin hyaluron-filler vitamin c booster.
  • Lamelle correctives vita c lipid serum.

5. Sunscreen

Yes, even in autumn, sunscreen is non-negotiable. UV rays don’t take a break, so neither should your SPF routine.

“I recommend using a sunscreen that’s SPF 30 or higher and contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide for maximum protection," advises Nikolic.

Applying SPF daily protects your skin from UV damage, which can weaken your skin barrier and accelerate ageing.

Autumn skincare tips for healthy, glowing skin:

Here are some practical tips to keep your skin barrier in top shape:

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!

Invest in a rich, hydrating moisturiser to combat dryness. Look for products with ceramides, glycerine, or hyaluronic acid.

Be gentle with your skin

Swap out harsh cleansers and exfoliants for milder options. Over-exfoliating can strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it vulnerable.

Layer your skincare

Start with lightweight serums, like hyaluronic acid, and finish with a thicker moisturiser to lock in hydration.

Stay hydrated

Your skincare routine isn’t just about what you put on your skin it’s also about what you put in your body. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from within.

Invest in antioxidants

Antioxidants like Vitamin C and E protect your skin from environmental damage and support barrier repair.

Why seasonal skincare matter?

Adjusting your skincare routine with the seasons isn’t just a trend it’s a way to ensure your skin stays healthy, no matter the weather.

SA’s climate can be harsh, but with the right products and a little extra care, you can keep that glowing summer vibe all year round.
